Awake January 2015: How did life begin? - More misquotes
by Designer Stubble in
some might assume that a scientifically-minded person would pick evolution and that a religious person would pick creation.
but not always.. rama singh, professor of biology at canadas mcmaster university, says: the opposition to evolution goes beyond religious fundamentalism and includes a great many people from educated sections of the population.
.
end-of-quote in awake.

This is great stuff. The only substantive content in this issue is manipulated and misleading. -

My Day's Long and Arduous Journey
by compound complex inthis, my day's long and arduous journey, is winding down as infinite night gracefully descends and takes me into her welcomed embrace.. i have no reason to fear the inevitable, my transition into a higher and more glorious estate than was allowed me upon this beautiful but angst-filled habitation.. what must be borne with calm, with dignity, with rejoicing, has been prepared for me from earliest times.
its accomplishment requires nothing of me .

I think CoCo you qualify as our poet laureate. Not all poetry rhymes, not all prose is poetic. -

I know having to work is a bit oppressive but I think working is good when you are older, mental stimulation, something to get up for, a feeling of still contributing are healthy things. Just use your obvious intelligence to earn money within your comfort zone. -

Je Suis Charlie
by Slidin Fast inthis incident in paris makes me feel absolutely furious.
yes i feel desperately sorry for the victims and their families no one should have to deal with that.
the thing that makes me feel absolutely incandescent though is the attack on freedom of speech and expression.

Sure Simon, the extremes are easy it is where they meet in the middle that is more difficult. -

The thing is, though I choke on it, the knife cuts both ways. Freedom of speech also has to be accorded to all including adherents of Islam. The line though has to be drawn but where? Hate speech should be illegal but what constitutes hate speech. Hate speech and fanning radicalism has to be trodden on hard but how do we clamp down on that but protect the original cartoons without labelling them hateful.
There are huge ethical problems to wrestle with but one thing is certain, there is nothing too extreme in punishing these evil monsters.

The thing that makes me feel absolutely incandescent though is the attack on freedom of speech and expression. The way in which dubs are restricted from saying what they think on pain of losing friends and family makes that issue the most sensitive on my radar. I just hope that the courage that this journal has shown is not quenched by this cowardly attack.

Personal reflections
by Freeof1914 inhello all and happy new year!.
i don't post here often, but as the new year just started and my birthday is tomorrow, i am feeling extra reflective.
it has been several years since i was willingly disfellowshipped, and i say willingly because when the judicial committee asked me my thoughts on the organization i told them i thought it was not a god directed organization.

Experience in a talk
by Da.Furious inlast week we had an elder giving a talk, cant remember the title.. the thing that was of interest is the experience he gave:.
"a brother who was working in a hospital had to leave his job which was paying him good money because the nurses wanted to sleep with him and they kept putting notes for him on his desk!".
this is not the first time i hear similar experience.

what about my wife. She is nice looking, and never had any of her managers wanting to have sex with her!
She would say that wouldn't she?

Poster country flags and privacy
by Simon inthe new forum originally had a little country flag next to each post showing the country that the post was made from based on the geoip encoding (the country the ip address is from).
before i switched over to the new site someone made an issue about it violating their privacy and i didn't want to complicate and confuse the switchover with policy debate at the same time as technical issues so removed the flags even though i disagreed.. someone has already requested it as a feature and i think it should be added back so i thought it's now time to open the discussion and get everyone's opinions.
first, the reason i think it should be shown:.

yah.. loaded language.. I love loaded language, it makes the argument so much better.
Simon started this topic to get input on the flag-feature. Now we are giving him our input and as best as i can tell the majority of posters on here support the idea that there should be an option to hide ones true flag -- exactly what the "small" group of so-called "intransigent" posters have argued all along. Do you feel this is somehow bad?
There may be many posts against but I am not sure that makes a majority of posters. I think that the word intransigence covers it. The same argument is made over and over, wash, rinse, repeat. In the absence of a GB, someone has to make a decision. The use of many words, the repeat of the same basic argument doesn't make it any stronger. Who would you suggest makes the decision bohm?
